Back in our days at Madonna University, Okija, where we both pursued Political Science, we didn’t just attend classes, we dreamed big. Together, we birthed Intellectual Minds as a bold platform to voice our deepest ideas, thoughts, and opinions. We believed (and still do) that thoughtful discourse could truly shape society and steer our future toward justice, progress, and enlightenment. Those weekly publications weren’t just articles; they were sparks of inspiration that challenged minds, ignited conversations, and touched readers far beyond our campus walls. Your passion, sharp intellect, and unwavering commitment made it all possible, and I’m forever grateful for the partnership that turned our shared vision into something real and impactful.

As you turn a year older today, my prayer is that life continues to be exceedingly gracious to you. May every step you take be met with favor, good health, boundless opportunities, and the kind of joy that overflows. Gracious and Eternal God,

Today I stand at the beautiful milestone of 37 a number that echoes Your perfect timing, Your holiness, and the promise that nothing is impossible with You.

Thank You for the gift of these 37 years.

Thank You for every breath, every scar that taught me resilience, every joy that reminded me of Your goodness, and every quiet moment when Your presence was more real than words could say.

You have carried me through valleys I never thought I’d survive, and You have led me to mountaintops I never dreamed I’d reach.

You have been my constant in the chaos, in the waiting, in the victories, and in the ordinary days.

As I reflect on this chapter called 37, I see Your hand weaving purpose through it all.

Like the mighty men of David who numbered 37 warriors of valor, loyalty, and uncommon courage I pray You make me strong in spirit, bold in faith, and steadfast in love.

Like the promise hidden in Your Word (Luke 1:37), “For with God nothing shall be impossible,” I receive fresh hope that the dreams still burning in my heart, the prayers still unanswered, and the areas still broken are not too difficult for You.

Lord, on this birthday I surrender the road behind me and step forward into the road ahead:

•  Give me wisdom deeper than my years

•  Grant me grace to love more freely and forgive more quickly

•  Strengthen my faith to trust You even when the path is unclear

•  Fill me with joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances

•  Surround me with people who sharpen me, encourage me, and walk with me toward Your heart

•  Let my life be a living testimony not perfect, but authentically Yours

May 37 be the year I rise higher, love deeper, serve bolder, and rest in Your presence more completely.

May it be the season where I see breakthroughs I’ve prayed for, healing I’ve believed for, and clarity I’ve sought for so long.

I thank You, Father, for the beautiful soul You are still shaping.

Tribal bigotry has resurfaced in recent times, which is rather unfortunate. Despite the numerous challenges we face, our differences do not pose any harm or danger. As a country that has endured inter-tribal clashes and a civil war, we do not need any agenda that divides us now or in the future. Regrettably, the 2023 general election was hijacked by desperate politicians seeking to divide us rather than unite us. Citizens must therefore be vigilant and refuse to allow politicians to use elections to divide us.

We are facing difficulties across the board. No region, tribe, or faith is immune to these difficulties. I have often said that tribal bigotry in Nigeria is self-hate. Why? Because you may hurt someone you care about in a war of tribal bigotry. Having existed for more than six decades post-independence, Nigerians have intertwined in such a manner that no tribe, faith, or region can claim to be purely isolated. Every tribe today shares bonds and relationships with different tribes in some way, whether by marriage, family, friendship, or business.

The conversations that young people are holding on social media, elevating tribal hate, must now stop. We cannot engage in meaningless discussions over tribal superiority when our society is collapsing. Job losses are recorded almost daily, food prices have skyrocketed, and inflation has made families poorer. Healthcare and education continue to suffer from negligence, and other sectors of our country are deteriorating. Nigerian youths have the duty to come together and think about ways to make life better and improve on our current conditions.

Politics is contentious, but it also affects our lives individually and collectively. We can align along party lines and ideological frameworks, but our well-being is what unites us. The kind of policies we adopt ultimately make or mar our lives. Therefore, we must now hold our leadership accountable regardless of our political alignments.

Nigeria’s future is now in our hands. We can no longer blame our past leaders when we are now in charge. We must hold ourselves responsible as citizens and leaders. We must be intentional about creating an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect, and rule of law. These are the guarantees for a stable society, economic progress, and global goodwill.

Elections reflect an aggregation of interests, and sometimes we may not find one candidate that embodies the whole aspirations of a people. This becomes even more difficult when the options are limited, as is the case with a two-party democracy. It is therefore pertinent for voters to be well aware of the implications of voting or abdicating from voting.

Today, my focus is on the US election, with a particular interest in reaching the immigrant constituency. Often, the immigrant community in the US steers clear of elections due to the deep-rooted ideologies that form the political structures. Some of these ideologies reflect aspects of American history that immigrants grapple to relate to. In recent times, we have seen the dynamics of US politics with regard to immigration. More and more, immigration has become a hot topic, whether in reference to the border crisis or opportunities available to legal migrants. To a large degree, US politics now reflect the cosmopolitan immigrant whose major aspiration is to find a meaningful and purposeful life in America.

These individuals have now become a significant group in the American political system, and there is every need to organize and become a strategic voting bloc to preserve our common interests within the Republic. Immigrants must seek alliances based purely on which side of the divide preserves their interests, but first, we must clearly define what these interests are. The dynamism of US politics could easily sway observers in many directions. You have the far left, the far right, the center left, and the center right. Within each of these groups, there are micro-interests that could easily mesmerize an immigrant coming from a different political climate. In my view, the immigrant’s single most important objective is settling down and being able to pursue their life ambitions. It is neither faith nor culture. The business of the immigrant should not, therefore, be influenced by those nuances. I believe that when we understand this objective clearly, we will be a significant group in the US election.

In conclusion, as we begin to warm up for the November election, let us as a group ask the pertinent question: between the two political parties and candidates, whose objectives align closely or even perfectly with ours? Remember, these “wingers” have their objectives clearly cut out, and they are pursuing them to the best of their abilities. You must also take a stance on preserving yours without prejudice.

To address the issue of states struggling to pay standard minimum wages in Nigeria, governors must transition from being mere administrators to becoming drivers of their local economies. More than ever, Nigeria needs fiscal federalism. Continuing with the current centripetal federalism will only push the Nigerian state further into an abyss.

Historically, Nigeria practiced centrifugal federalism during the First Republic. During this period, Nigeria was self-sufficient, feeding its citizens and dominating the African continent during the era of decolonization. The regional economies at the time produced world-class educational institutions and other developmental infrastructures. Importantly, regional governments did not rely on federal allocations to pay their workers.

The current practice of centripetal federalism, introduced by military rule, is the root cause of Nigeria’s economic setbacks. To move forward, we must seek a constitutional review that, among other things, returns the decentralized economic management of the country.

What does this mean? It means that corporations must be registered by local authorities, regulations must be administered primarily by the states, and corporate taxes must be collected by the states.

Introduction: Nigeria, like many nations, aspires to be globally respected and recognized. However, two fundamental pillars that underpin such respect—Economy and Security—have remained elusive. The persistent challenges in these areas are a source of national disturbance and hinder the country’s progress.

Economic and Security Synergy: The economy and security are deeply intertwined. A robust economy can fund the necessary security measures, while a secure environment fosters economic growth. Nigeria’s approach to these pillars must be innovative, practical, and scalable, tailored to the nation’s unique needs and circumstances.

A Framework for Enhanced Security: To upgrade security, Nigeria must consider a constitutional amendment or review that allows for a more decentralized security framework. This would enable subnational governments to provide security in tandem with the federal government, creating a more dynamic and responsive security landscape.

Enhancing security in Nigeria is indeed a multifaceted challenge that requires a comprehensive and measured approach. The idea of a practical and scalable framework is crucial, as it suggests a solution that can be adapted to different contexts within the nation and can grow in response to evolving security needs.

Constitutional Amendment for Decentralized Security: The proposal for a constitutional amendment to allow subnational governments to provide security alongside the federal government is a significant step. This decentralization could empower local authorities with the autonomy to address security issues more effectively, as they are often more familiar with the unique challenges of their regions. It could also lead to a more responsive and community-oriented security apparatus.

Key Elements of a Scalable Security Framework:

1. Community Engagement: Involving local communities in security planning and decision-making can foster trust and cooperation between citizens and security forces.
2. Technology Integration: Utilizing modern technology, such as surveillance systems and data analytics, can enhance intelligence gathering and law enforcement capabilities.
3. Capacity Building: Training and equipping security personnel with the necessary skills and resources is essential for effective security operations.
4. Interagency Collaboration: Encouraging cooperation among various security agencies can lead to a more unified and efficient response to security threats.

While conservatives are adept at presenting statistics and information, there is a growing concern about their ability to connect emotionally with a broader audience.

The Charisma Deficit: Charismatic leadership is characterized by an individual’s ability to inspire, motivate, and invoke enthusiasm among followers. It is a quality that transcends mere policy details and resonates on a personal level with the electorate. The absence of such traits in conservative leaders can lead to a disconnect with the public, especially in an era where emotional appeal is as influential as logical persuasion.

Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. In politics, EI is crucial for understanding the needs and feelings of constituents, building relationships, and fostering trust. It is not enough to be right; leaders must also be relatable.

The Importance of Empathy: Empathy, a core component of EI, allows leaders to connect with people on a deeper level. It enables politicians to comprehend the lived experiences of individuals and communities, thus informing more compassionate and inclusive policymaking. In conservative politics, where the focus is often on tradition and stability, integrating empathy can bridge the gap between principles and people’s daily realities.

Moving Forward: For conservatism to thrive and appeal to a wider audience, it must evolve to include leaders who not only uphold conservative values but also demonstrate emotional intelligence. This evolution will require a conscious effort to cultivate empathy, encourage open communication, and prioritize the emotional well-being of the populace alongside economic and social policies.

Centuries ago, Europe exerted its influence over many parts of the world, imposing its regime style, culture, values, and norms. In the process, indigenous practices were often suppressed. However, as the call for decolonization grew louder, European officials played a role in shaping a global system that paradoxically perpetuated dependence in their former colonies. Some of these newly freed colonies were organized in ways that hindered social cohesion, leading to conflicts and setbacks.

Unfortunately, both the indigenous rulers who took over from European officials and the operators of the global system struggled to address these challenges effectively. Today, Europe faces immigration issues, with many immigrants coming from its former colonies. Understanding this historical context is crucial, especially considering renewed calls by Western conservatives to restrict immigration and repatriate migrants.

In summary, our interconnected human community thrives when we prioritize communal well-being over individual self-interest. As we move forward, let’s learn from past events and commit to creating a more compassionate and cooperative world.
